The Sacrament of Reconciliation
Celebrating God's Forgiveness
Sandra DeGidio, O.S.M.
The Sacrament of Reconciliation is much more than getting rid of our
sins. "The important point is what God does in, with and through us,"
writes DeGidio. It depends on three C's (conversion, confession and celebrationin that
order). The parable of the prodigal son provides a framework for discussing this
sacrament. Conversion is a "continuous, ongoing, lifelong process which brings us
ever closer to 'the holiness and love of God.'" Confession helps us to acknowledge
our sinfulness and prepares us for God's joy that we have "come to our senses."
Having been forgiven, we in turn promote reconciliation within the larger human family.
